I have to manually copy updates to the /boot/firmware partition from NVMe to the USB Key later on. For me, this appears the most simple way to have a system installed on NVMe at this time.

You might find usb-boot useful (it's been updated to also support NVME storage devices).

usb-boot uses the SD card instead of a USB device to 'hybrid boot' another device. The SD card stays in place and fstab is adjusted so that updates go to the SD card BOOT partition, eliminating the need to manually copy them or reinsert anything before rebooting. Boot order would need to be set to SD card first. sdc-boot can be used to periodically switch to booting the SD card instead of the NVME device if needed.
