While I agree with your thoughts, the logistics are tough. Plus for electronics, since SMT, repairing is tough. Single sided circuit boards, through hole on 100 thou centers can be worked on by almost anyone that can hold a soldering iron. Discrete were "big". At one point I was having boards made and doing my own drilling, then stuffing and soldering.And that will likely the case for almost all manufacturers in the foreseeable future. Will be so until legislation does demand more of manufacturers.Unfortunately on the Pi case, it likely translates to you being able to buy the SBC to "repair" the failed SBC. The legislation I have seen does not require the vendor to make all components available as anything approaching their "cost" in single unit quantities.
Now with SMT the small packages are super finicky to handle, high pin count packages are BGA, and you need skills and at least some specialized equipment. Yes it can be done, but the skills required are beyond what many even relatively competent folks have.
What happens when said dyi'er mucks it up and then demands what, that the vendor makes it right?
