When teaching people, I tend to tell them to use "rsync -a" rather than "cp". That way they get comfortable with rsync, and then learn new flags as they need extra functionality.Or rsync - which has a steep learning curve, but once you get the hang of it, it is pretty cool.
WRT the original query, my assumption is that if the OP is using connect rather than already using SSH, then there isn't direct SSH connectivity.
