Yes; I agree...The OP's post was a bit vague...the way I read it; he was talking about at start up...hence my comment about SR vs SSD...But either way; if it's not a powered hub; I still doubt that the PI will support 7 drives of any type!I suspect that the issue might be down to power...
Are these drives spinning rust or SSD? SR draw more power.
That's not always the case. HDDs use most power when spinning up. SSDs when writing. Some SSDs use more power than some HDDs.
There's a further problem with some self powered enclosures for 3.5" drives too: 12v is draw from their own supply but 5v is still drawn from the USB host. What power supply are you using with the Pi?
And what does "powered by 2x 4-wide-spaced-socket power boards" actually mean? It implies a number of self powered drive enclosures but lets be specific please.
This comment..
"If I power off everything re-try powering on the Pi 5 only, with the unpowered USB3 hubs still attached, it does boot to the desktop OK and works well."
Makes me think that he's using an unpowered hub.
I definitely think I would look at the power supply before worrying about the disk format.
