Interestingly, both "screen" and "minicom" are based on Ctrl/A, right? (It having been literally many decades since I tried minicom - again, the worst piece of software ever - but ISTR it was based on ^A).
And to go even further afield, for me, tmux is also based on ^A. Since I want both tmux and screen to work, as much as possible, the same way (since I use both on a daily basis), the first thing I did on adopting tmux was to change the magic key to be the same as screen. Incidentally, I get why the author made it different - it's because tmux was actually developed under screen, so, obviously, it made sense for the developer to make the magic keys different (for his own sanity...).
And, of course, tmux is completely off-topic for this thread, since it does *not* do serial comms.
