We used to hook up a high impedance audio amp to the the ADC input and have a listen, there are a lot of noise sources that are difficult to identify with digital analysis or after digital processing.
One was a laptop power supply which induced all sorts of random sounds onto the signals, moving it away and into another power socket cleaned up a lot of problems we had. We later discovered that it didn't like being plugged into a filtered mains extension, anything else plugged into the same mains extension was affected by it.
Then there were the fluorescent lamps that thought they had broadcast licenses, no doubt some LED devices have taken over the roll, I do very little analogue stuff these days.
