So I'm astonished (negatively) with the RP2040. I wouldn't even know how I could have caused this pin to die.
I don't believe there's any indication that RP2040 is any worse (or better) than other comparable chips. Pins typically get blown up by ESD or overvoltage.

One thing that perhaps affects Pico users more than some is the fact that Pico is normally USB connected and not otherwise grounded. When plugged in to laptops or USB "charger" type power supplies where the ground connection has ~120V AC on it relative to true ground, and then connecting some other piece of equipment to a GPIO that has a true ground connection. If the GPIO connects first (easily done on a breadboard) then a big pulse of current flows through it.
