So at the moment we believe the AI really did understand the design of the filter which we had described in great detail including all the flaws in it that gave it that special 'Rick Wakeman' sound.
The "AI" is not sentient. It literally can not understand anything.
No of course it's not sentient. But 'understanding' is actually a word applied to trained neural nets, and this one definitely generated something quite unique. And of course it had to 'understand' the rules of writing C++ to generate that original code that did compile correctly.

As Sam Altman said "DALLE-2 does seem to “understand” concepts at many levels and how they relate to each other in sophisticated ways.”

So sentience and understanding are very different things.
How can something that is not sentient "understand" anything? You believing it to be the case does not make it so.
