Erm, RS485 can be used over much longer distances, it is bit rate dependent but RS485 runs can easily be longer than ethernet. For instance the maximum recommended at 100kbaud is 1.2km (the quality of cable will matter at this distance)... At 10MHz 12m is recommended max, but it can often easily exceed that, 40m isn't unusual.Wire solutions:
