I'm thinking I will try two standard microscope objectives mounted back-to-back for a 1:1 macro setup, and see where that gets me. If my simplistic understanding of the Abbe formula for microscope lens resolution is correct, even a cheap pair of 0.1 NA objectives stands a chance of being in the ballpark of the resolution I'm looking for, esp. as I only need monochrome, and I control the illumination, which can be 405 nm for example. So 1.22 * (405 nm) / (0.1 + 0.1) = 2.47 microns, and the 1.55 pixel spacing of the HQ camera oversamples that by less than a factor of 2. If I actually manage that, it would be good enough.
