Using thonny means you want to use micropython.
First step to prepare a pico for micropython is to flash the pico with an appropriate flash file. Be careful to select either the plain pico flile or a wifi pico-w file.

Then thonny is used: connect pico with USB (no bootsel needed for this step). In thonny, tools/options/interpreter select micropython(raspberry pi pico).
