My Pi5 stopped working around 6 months ago, but I had no time to fix it. Yesterday, I downloaded and installed the latest Pi OS Desktop to my USB flash disk. In the beginning, I tried to log in through the desktop environment. After inputting the password, the system just kept returning to the log-in screen. I doublechecked the log-in name and password and could not find anything wrong. I was locked out.
Then, I tried to access the machine through SSH. My Pi5 is connected to a monitor. I find that whenever the monitor is on, I cannot access the machine. SSH works only on headless mode.
After accessing the machine, I changed the boot level to text console through raspi-config . Finally, I was able to access the system and started the desktop environment using startx . Since I could not start the desktop environment as root, I found that I was not able to start the wifi even though I was in.
Any ideas what cause all these problems? How can I restore the eeprom to factory settings? Thanks.
