I've had enough of out-of-tree stuff for this week with another Waveshare mess, so I'm not investigating.
DRM HDMI devices do normally have a direct link to the DDC interface for EDID parsing etc, so it would be possible to expose that in the core DRM frameworks. However it's extra work that I have little motivation for at present.
Just a thought, a brightness control on a display device does not necessarily convert to backlight control. I wonder if that is the reason that it's never been plumbed together.
Also there's no way to expose contrast, saturation, etc, so is it best left to userspace as it currently is.
