I can get a keyboard and monitor if I have to, but I strongly prefer to be able to set up headless pis without that stuff, just on principal, even if it means I need to go to school a little to be a better sysadmin.
Some times the correct choice is to get a keyboard and monitor.
Alternatives include adding a USB ethernet dongle (if you have access to a wired ethernet LAN) or enabling the UART and using a serial connection. The latter being slightly more useful as it will let you see the boot messages but you need a 3.3v TTL connection on the other device as 5v or RS232 level signals will damage the Pi.
