Troubleshooting • Pi 3B not booting from USB (power issue?)

Hi Everyone,

I'm running HA-OS 13.2 on a PI 3 B booting from an USB 2,5" SATA SSD.
I use a dirt cheap fanxiang SSD in an old fantec ALU-25U3 enclosure I had lying around.

This works ... sometimes ... other times the bootloader will tell me that USB device detection failed.
In those cases the activity / power led will blink shortly (indicating activity) then turning off for a few seconds, before coming back on solid indicating power but no activity.

Guessing this could be a power issue, I tried with an IDE/SATA adpater with external power supply and so far it worked every time.

Could this really be a power issue?
I'm running the Pi off an official 2.5 amp power supply.
If I read the docs correctly the LAN9514 should be able to deliver 500mA over USB 2.0.
What isn't as easy to find is information about the SSDs powerdraw but information that can be found says power draw might exceed 500mA.

What's confusing me is, that if it boot sucessfully, it's running flawlessly indicating there might be enough power?

Do any of you sucessfully run external SATA SSD over USB on a Pi 3b? If so: how? Y-Cables? Cases with external power supply (hard to find in 2,5" variety)?

Thanks in advance, Rob
