You are exactly correct. I thought i was able to use the GPIO header as i have used HATs with just a couple of pins (DMR radio hotspot) and the whole thing is basically to save my USB ports for other things .
The AIS Receiver module powers up with the 5v. However, i cannot retrieve data from it via UART despite the module working in its proper environment. Even tried other GND and swapping data RX/TX .
Are you saying i would not be able to run this device on the header of the pi4b?
