Digging further, I can see that the issue is one of permissions, but I am not sure how to deal with it.
The item 750GB Volume shows up in File Manager (as /mdedia/danco/750 GB Volume) whose properties are Owner Root, Group Root,, view content and access content anyone, change content only owner.
On the other hand, gparted shows a single partition, /dev/sda1, formatted ext4 and mounted. And the command line (after I made some changes) shows this as owned by danco.
But I don't know if it is possible or advisable, to change ownership on /dev/sda, or what I can do to get write access to the volume.
