I'm surprised noone has asked the key question here: What happens if you shut everything down, plug in the drive, then fire it all back up?
The point is that the sort of thing you are seeing is not at all uncommon - that for one reason or another, when you plug in (or sometimes when you unplug/remove) a USB device on a running system, it crashes, but that if you have everything connected at boot (i.e., before applying power), things work OK.
