Thanks. Just to clarify I few things - I'm using Buster specifically so I can use the config.txt to set the resolution. The overscan is to achieve the 640x400 that the SM124 supports. I'm basically following what they did in the German thread because I'm trying to get the Pi to work as the old Atari ST did with its branded monitors. But also keeping modern connectivity such as HDMI. So DPI probably won't work too well. I'll do some more investigation to see what might trigger the worrying sounds - but I would have though feeding TTL voltages, negative or positive, to a monitor expecting 1V levels might be a good place to start.
