this is a great response, thank you, yes, the enviro+ hat is the one I'm using, and as you said I believe the actual pins are in use by the air sensor (one of the configuration settings needed to set it up ensures the serial console is enabled/active, supporting that it's needed by the hat)
great link though too, I was not aware of pinout.xyz, that's useful to bookmark for later.
I suspect a different approach on how to debug this is needed, getting a stable console connection seemed a short cut to hopefully getting some meaningful output.
