Since posting, I had swapped out the switch, which made no difference. I then realised I was using three flat Cat6 unbranded cables. One by one, I swapped these out, and the problem has now gone away.
Bizarrely, if I use the same cables with an Acer Revo, they behave perfectly. The cables aren't particularly long (1.5m), so I wouldn't have anticipated a noticeable voltage drop from one end to the other, but who knows....
