The way I did this was using an ESP32.
It has Bluetooth. I plugged a cheap OBD2 Bluetooth device into the OBD port then reverse engineered the Bluetooth packets.
I also attached a small OLED display for real time visual updates and an SD card for logging.
I managed 10Hz logging.

The Bluetooth dongle was a :
Vgate icar pro.
