The very first Pi1 boards had 256M (but these are pretty rare these days). I suspect they will not even boot to desktop.
Sounds like a challenge to me...
The Bookwork Lite image should be fine on 512M, and functional on 256M (but it depends on what you try to run).
I've currently got the Trixie 32bit lite beta (upgraded from Bookworm) running on an original 256MB Pi1. Not done much with it but it seems to be stable. By implication the same should apply to Bookworm lite.
