Now that PREEMPT_RT is being made available for Pi RT OS (which is great btw!), the only feature needed for Pi's to be a bigger player in Industrial Automation is a SuperCAP. The SuperCAP would maintain power for a brief amount of time (30 sec), enabling a controlled shutdown of the OS on a power loss event. This would allow time for persistent application data to be saved before shutdown of the unit. The trick is that the SuperCAP power circuit needs some smarts to allow for automatic reboot once controlled shutdown is complete, main power is restored, and the SuperCAP is fully charged.
