HI Thanks that's very interesting I. I had 5 alkaline batteries ( brand new ) but were rated at only 2000mah so maybe that's why. I will wait until my all powerful battery comes from China and probably blow mine pi up !!

Here's a pic of my project so far. Its a old 911 technic Porsche that im a using as a donor. Ive taken the slip differential and steering rack and made my own thing out of it. The steering works and it drives quite well using one motor to drive both wheels.

Alkaline batteries are really not up to the job....as I think you found...You might manage with lithium AA batteries as gregorianranter has done.

I found that that I got better performance with the 18650 batteries. They are what is typically used in power tool packs, electric bikes and cars. You can find plenty of comparisons online about the differences between the two. e.g.
