Managed to get it working as an ethernet gadget running off a Pi 5 USB 2 port using your guide thagrol - many thanks.
Also fished out my Debug Probe and gave it a spin to see what the Pi 4 firmware is saying at boot, and configured it with a Linux serial console. Very handy bit of kit.
