Another thing that you could try is to use balena etcher. It used to be the standard for creating Pi images. It runs on Mac.
Yes, I keep Etcher. Never liked it much, not sure why, but I keep it for situations like this and that's what I used to get this install done.

You posted several links and the one about it freezing may be the issue. Maybe the UI is freezing when I click the "Select Device" button. I was thinking in terms of it not getting the list, not in terms of it freezing - sometimes it's easy to get stuck on one view of what's happening.

I have 2 Mac Minis and I keep them in sync in terms of OS updates and use Syncthing to sync configuration changes for a lot of my development software. I've had Imager on them for a couple years now, and this is the first time I've had a problem with either one. Now I'm getting this issue on the Mac in my study, but not in my workshop.

Network install won't help, since I'm not using a base Pi system (in this case it's Home Assistant), and I need to write an image to the medium I'm using on the Pi (in this case a microSD card, but could be a USB stick).
