The book has good reasons to use that board. The cheap Lcd1602 boards are really for 5V Arduino. The responsible thing to do is to ask beginners to use a 3V3 board that will work properly. OLEDs are plentiful and cheap too, and folks bump into a SSD1306 vs SH1106 chip library problem regularly. Par for the course. I've got dead-on-arrival boards before, DC-DC stuff. Bought LCDs that arrived with a slightly different spec. A beginner's book has to pick stuff that is minimal risk, not Shenzhen specials. So, these things happen -- which is also great in my view, because learning to troubleshoot is a very, very important skill. So, no biggie. :D :D :D
