Thank you all. I ran some additional experiments and if the GPS antenna is placed far away, on a GND plane, etc. then the Pi seems to be able to sustain a USB3 connection and a steady PPS heartbeat.
I had a hiccup on reboot, so even if a distant GPS sensor works fine, it's likely better to stick to USB 2. Thank you all again.
