I think you may like the Pi 500 Plus since it's ready to go without add on.I understand the above ‘design’ would not satisfy everyone, but would be a good compromise for a SBC that is ready to go without add on.
Engineering is a compromise between good in one way versus good in another. From what I can tell, the tradeoffs in the present models were carefully considered and not accidental. However, this is just an obvious observation and not the result of any privileged knowledge. I'm quite happy to be a simple customer not involved with the meetings where design decisions are worked out.
Personally, I think conversations with customers along the lines of where are we now, where are we going and what do you want are important. On the other hand, a successful technology company will innovate in ways that are more useful than what a customer might ask for.
From my point of view Raspberry Pi has led with the original Pi, the Pi 2, the Pi 4, the Pi 500 Plus, the Pico and a flat pricing model. Of course I only speak for my own interests and needs, but that is exactly why customer-led development is not as successful as technological leadership.
