It gets a bit stranger. It appears that the cleaning person accidentally cracked the boot SD. Fortunately, I had a recent backup from which I was able to boot.They may have done you a favour. It's an opportunity to revisit the problem from scratch with bookwork/trixie and that usb cam may now even work there.
I'm kind of amused because stuff like that happens to me and it's nice to know I'm not alone.
I decided to dual home the thing and connect to the router via both WiFi and Ethernet. What I discovered, despite online advice to the contrary, is this doesn't work. With both interfaces connected, either one or both of them constantly disconnected. I solved this by unplugging my brand new CAT6 Ethernet Cable and since then there have been no problems. USB camera works. All the shell scripts work. Connection to and communication with the UPS works. No gaps in the logs. All is well.
