Wouldn't it just be easier to note what the State Machine's X value is when the other buttons are pushed, and then subtract that from the subsequent Sate Machine X values read ?
Similar to not altering a clock which is wrong, just noting how out it is when the actual time becomes known, then applying the fix to what the clock shows when you need to know the time. A PITA with a physical clock, but easy, simple and completely transparent when done inside a microprocessor.
