from what ive heard in other threadsThe PCIe connector on the Pi5 is specified as Gen2 compliant.Sure, you can crank up to Gen3 at own risk but do not start to complaign it isn't working.
If it would be Gen3 compliant I would assume that folks at RPi Ltd. would have speced it accordingly.
Well, from my understanding of PCIe the biggest impact comes from the connector...
the bcm2712 cant meet the clock jitter requirements of gen3
so the frequency of the pcie link clock is changing too much, and it doesnt meet the standards
some devices may handle that better then others, and if they dont handle it well, they sample the bus at the wrong time, and a bit gets corrupted
and then its up to ECC to detect and/or correct
