Or am i better off finding an old simple x86 box and getting an usb -> IRDA dongle and trying to run it from ms-dos/windows there?
USB won't work. DOS programs only use physical COM ports. USB is not supported. You need an RS232-to-IRDA cable. These contain such a chip
