Troubleshooting • Problem with 2.5Gbps USB Network Adapter on Raspberry Pi 5

Good morning,

I have an issue with my Raspberry Pi 5 (2Gb) and a USB-A to 2.5Gbps Ethernet network adapter, specifically one from UGREEN with a Realtek `RTL8156` chipset.

I've noticed that when I install the full 64-bit Raspberry Pi OS (whether based on Debian 12 or Debian 13), the 2.5Gbps USB network adapter works without any problems. However, when I install Raspberry Pi OS Lite 64-bit (again, based on either Debian 12 or Debian 13), it doesn't recognize the USB network adapter when starting or restarting the system. Every time I power off and on, I have to physically unplug the USB and plug it back in for it to be detected.

I need to install Raspberry Pi OS Lite, but I can't find a way to install Realtek drivers for the `RTL8156` in Raspberry Pi OS either. Interestingly, I tried installing the full version of Raspberry Pi OS (since it obviously includes something that allows the device to be recognized immediately), but after removing the graphical interface the network adapter stopped working again and I had to keep disconnecting and reconnecting it.

Has anyone who has experienced this issue been able to suggest what steps to follow?
I saw that there was a similar post on the forum, but it seems that solution is no longer valid: viewtopic.php?t=362358

Thank you very much.
