Although I'm trying something similar not yet with any luck, it does seem as if you might not have enough target packages enabled (through buildroot's menuconfig). Here's what I'm doing in menuconfig:
that should at least provide SDL2 (I think!)
Do let me know how you get on, since I'm in the same boat!
p.s. what is your SDL2 application written as/in?
p.p.s. in my case I'd prefer wayland, hence not enabling any X11 stuff
