The converter board also supports direct current (DC) inputs ranging from 6V to 20V. This was definitely a face-palm moment — I hadn’t RTFM. After actually reading it, I see that the board has proper soldering pads for DC input, and it clearly supports a 6–20 V input range, just as you mentioned.

Case closed: I can safely get rid of that extra conversion layer.
