I had the same issue when I upgraded the OS to bookworm in January 24. Real VNC stopped working . and using advice on these forums was using tiger vnc instead. experience was smooth except for the trouble to keying in username and password everytime in tiger vnc
Today, just felt like tinkering again and found that bookworm uses Wayland X Window system which has issues with Real VNC, whereas the X11 was used in the earlier version.
first did sudo apt-get update and then sudo apt-get upgrade , 500 MB of files were installed for the upgrade
sudo raspi-config and advanced settings and changed the X window system to X11 from the default wayland
reinstalled real vnc on raspberry and upgraded real vnc on my windows client to 7.10.0
now, able to connect using real vnc!
