I'm one of the developers ;-)
Thanks for that, it's rare to find a developer so closely involved with the end users !

Regarding 'stretch' behaviour, how did it choose 1280x720 if the TV said it wants something different ?.
Are you sure this statement is correct - "stretch didn't support the custom mode 1440x900 your monitor claims to prefer" ?
When I tried changing RPi resolution on 'stretch', using the GUI preferences app, I'm sure I saw 1440x900 in there somewhere.
Where does the OS get the data to populate the drop-down list from ?

( I tried the tvservice command to view stuff, and one of it's options is to list the CEA and DMT ( or whatever they are ) capabilities. The drop-down list in the GUI looked awfully similar to these lists from tvservice. It will be Monday before I can check properly, but if anyone has got an old TV it would be simple to check.)

I can't remember how or when my 'stretch' SD card was made, but I think it was back in 2017. When it boots up it shows a 640x480 OS selection screen, which then starts 'stretch' after a 5 second countdown. This low-res 5 second screen at least lets me know the hardware is working. The 'bullseye/bookworm' SD cards just look like they aren't working.

It was only when somebody suggested looking for the RPi on the local network that I found that the RPi was running but not displaying. It would be so much better if the OS started with a simple HDMI setting, before changing to the full-blown graphics.
