Awesome, thank you for your response, I feel so lost among all the options!

Having said that, maybe this one actually looks pretty high quality:
I was trying to find whether anyone made a multi-SATA-data-only usb hub, but there probably isn't a market for something like that.
It really doesn't have to be very fast, I mean the 14 HDD's I have connected to it via the two usb enclosures atm aren't partuclarly fast either.
The online reviews of devices like the one in the picture seem very mixed, also all of them are made from uncertified chinese sources, so I'm unsure about the quality of something I have running 24/7.Most of the M.2 to SATA adapters I've seen are either passive devices (the single port ones) or port multiplies (the multi port ones). Both of those types require that SATA port be present on the M.2 connector.

Mhmm, but that would mean 3 devices that can fail no? The m.2 hat + M.2-PCIE +PCIE-SATA card...seems like a very fiddly setup.Another option would be an M.2 to PCIe adapter and a SATA PCIe card.
That would be amazing, I haven't heard of those, are people working on any? Any rumours of release dates?Or wait for a Pi5 to PCIe adapter to be released.
yeah, I was thinking of using a usb-3 hub and 6 USB3-sata adapters. But as you said , all the ones on the market seem to require some soldering work.. and if I get 6 of them it also won't be super affordable. You could also use USB 3 to SATA adpater and adapt them so that power and data are on separate connectors. Trivially done with a slightly modified SATA extension cable.

Yeah, I have my current PI5 booting from the NVMe disk, but it's actually not that much faster, so I'm thinking of ditching that anyway and booting from a good sd. Not using an ssd for booting also leaves another slot free to be used for SATA-HDD connections.Lastly, booting from SATA drives is not supported but you can put just the boot partition on SD or USB and have the root partition on SATA.
