For me the first on my Mac is better as the Pi USB ports are buried in a rack with the SD Card slot facing the frontOf those three options, the third is clearly the best.
When working with Pis, it is always a good idea to have a spare bootable SD card lying around.
Because it is always possible for S to happen. Count on it eventually happening.
But I do agree that 'if it can going wrong - it will' applies more times than I want
