Troubleshooting • RPi5 8GB hanging and occasionally logging out

This has happened on occasion before, but this evening it is making me crazy as I am working on a project and it has shifted into overdrive.

The machine is constantly hanging up. Input freezes for several seconds and the cursor or input does not respond. If I continue typing, the words I type will sometimes show up on the screen eventually. This may happen a couple of time in succession, or it may be a couple of minutes apart.

Then, it has autonomously logged out of session to the log-in screen a couple of times. The display goes black, then I get the log in screen and have to reopen everything. That last time it happened, I was closing the three or four programs I had open and as I closed a text editor the screen went black, then I was prompted to log back in to a clear desktop.

I am assuming these issues are related as they just started happening with this kind of regularity. The CPU temp is running in the low fifties, so it is not an issue of overheating. The active cooler is working, as well.

Oddly, I am noticing that the hanging up seems to not be happening as I am typing text into this field in Brave browser. It seems to happen in my LibreOffice Writer and in a simple text editor. Seems that I can type here and as long as this window is in focus the cursor and input do not hang.

I am running the Raspberry Pi OS, 64 bit edition.

I am baffled. I do not know if anyone would have a handle on what is happening. I may just need to reinstall, but that is extremely frustrating as it would entail re-configuring all of my installed applications.
