I bypassed the auto grow capability and wrote my own first-run script. The device booted many times on this partition fine. The ext4 filesystem shrank. This is not the first time this happened. The device in question did not have a backup battery installed to allow a clean shutdown. I know the ext4 filesystem is not 100% power fail safe. I expected to possibly lose files on a hard power down, but I expected fsck to recover lost sectors. Can the ext4 filesystem shrink under such conditions? If not, what can cause it to shrink?
