Without experience I think that Optane hardware was good enough, only Intel tried to monetise it before there was a developer base to create any software that relied on it. Intel did the same with their offload engines--no widespread integration because not enabled by default.It's a pity the Intel Optane storage never lived up the hype. It would have made a good nVME SSD, and perhaps even micro-SD medium...Using NVM for video file editing wears the Flash out like nothing else, hence my suggestion. But yes I use a PC for it, it was just a suggestion for those who use Pis for everything.
Back on topic, with early models Raspberry Pi sold licenses to enable the MPEG-2 decoder. Only a small percentage spent the extra money to unlock the hardware and maybe as a result there was not much take-up among developers.
