It's called "Linux Fragmentation". The packages cover a wide variety of hardwares and OS's, far more diverse than Windows. Many developer's just re-compile for each architecture and hope for the best. lol. Some packages aren't QA (quality assurance) tested too well on Linux, while in some cases QA may be better on Windows. Fragmentation makes QA very difficult. Many Linux packages are written by people out of their garage with very limited time to support it (although the same is said for Windows).
